1\ escarpment "sweetheart" deal
BACKGROUND
BHP owns huge parcels of land within the Illawarra (south coast of NSW) escarpment. Most of these properties are undeveloped at present and would become very expensive real estate indeed when sold to private individuals because of the picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean and other views of the escarpment.
"THE DEAL"
So that it need not be responsible for these tracts of land within the Illawarra escarpment BHP have given the land to Wollongong City Council with the proviso that BHP can obtain the title of the land back at any time it nominates! It is really only a small matter that Wollongong City Council tend for these properties because the real reason is that BHP don't pay rates for the period that Wollongong City Council "own" the land! Now Wollongong City Council has had the Lord Mayor's appeal on a fraud conviction dismissed. Is it really any wonder that such a "sweetheart" deal was done between BHP and Wollongong City Council?
WOULDN'T PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS WANT TO
HAVE SUCH A DEAL WITH THEIR COUNCILS!
These multinationals can do whatever they like!

2\ another BHP corruption
'story'
BHP mafia
The long saga of one person's fight
for justice against a mining giant!
I had a successful business purchasing and selling mining equipment and travelled extensively throughout the country. One notable sale was for an AM 50 - basically a porcupine of rock-cutting picks mounted on tracks. The price offered was $30,000 to Nebo Colliery (a BHP mine) and this price was refused. The mining machine was then auctioned and purchased by myself for $10,000. The sale of this AM 50 was already arranged to the NEW ZEALAND Mining Ministry and stalled then finally collapsed when I could not reach agreement with BHP over its transport - yet the delivery to the surface was guaranteed in the purchase contract!
continuing on ....... the BHP mafia stepped into the transport of this machine. Mafia demands were forwarded to Mr. Don Argus Chairman of the Board of BHP Billiton Ltd this week (14/11/01). It will be interesting to see if there is a response!
As a BHP colliery manager once said to us in the presence of a BHP engineer, "If you ever show BHP how to save the shareholders money .... they will show you the door." After a serious of threats, sabotage and the safety of our staff put at risk daily the words of this manager still haunt us.
To be continued ...

Who's established a temporary coal dump in the Illawarra without a Development Application? BHP of course. One Councillor is interested and I've heard the General Manager wants to keep this quiet!
There'll be more on this temporary coal dump - sans D.A.

5\ Sandon Point
Community's Coastal Park
STOCKLAND PTY LTD
The story of a community's brave fight against a goliath corporation. STOCKLAND purchased the land from BHP for a remarkably cheap price considering the worth of the land on the residential market! Now the nearby residents are up in arms, the aboriginal community also and there is general malaise in Wollongong City Council (south of Sydney, Australia) about the issue!
The land should have been donated or bought back by the NSW Government for a coastal park. KURADJI - the last green corridor in the Illawarra!

6\ Fire Services
for Free (to them)
BHP Steel - Port Kembla
Whilst the homeowner is struggling under increased insurance payments BHP Steel at Port Kembla get their fire services for nothing! In the state of NSW there is surcharge placed on household insurance premiums to pay for fire services to the community. These Fire Stations are for extinguishing fires in the suburbs they are located. In the Illawarra region of NSW BHP Steel don't pay any household insurance so therefore they contribute nothing to these fire services!
Just one more example of laws to suit the wealthy and overseas shareholders and further burden the majority of Australians!
One can easily understand the common policies of both the Australian Federal Government and New South Wales State Government with this example. One would assume that a larger house would take more than one fire tender and therefore those with larger houses should contribute more. If the rich and the poor are taxed the same amount then the rich, with their larger houses, are favourably treated.
